Vocational courses no longer second choice, says DPM

JOHOR BARU: Technical studies and vocational courses are no longer seen as the second choice among students who choose to pursue tertiary studies in non-academic fields.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that the courses have become the first choice as such skills have highly marketable prospects upon graduation.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister said Saturday that besides community colleges and institutions, a lot of higher education institutions like Universiti Tun Hussein Onn (UTHM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) offering diploma and degree courses in the skill-based courses.

“I encourage more SPM or similar graduates to take the opportunity to continue their studies in technical and vocational courses to add to the high-skill, high-income workforce in the country,” he said.

Muhyiddin said that in his speech during the closing ceremony of the “Jom Masuk U” carnival at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) here.
