KUALA LUMPUR, July 16 (Bernama) — Malaysia can achieve its target of having 50 per cent of its workforce highly skilled by 2020, said Human Resource Minister Datuk Richard Riot.
He said at present only 28 per cent of the country’s 12 million workforce was highly skilled.
“While increasing the number skilled workers through vocational institutions such as industrial training institutes, the ministry is taking steps to reduce dependence on foreign labour,” he told reporters at the breaking of fast hosted by the ministry for the media here Tuesday night.
He expressed his confident that the number of foreign workers would be reduced gradually with the implementation of minimum wage in January next year.
“On the other hand, job seekers should not be choosy. There is a need to raise awareness that blue collar workers could fetch higher income than white collar workers like in developed countries,” he added.
Present was ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Zainal Rahim Seman.
