Workers can demand higher pay for better skills through TVET

PUTRAJAYA, May 27 — Human Resources Minister M. Kulasegaran today urged workers to take up technical and vocational training so they can push for higher salaries.

He said this was why the ministry proposed that technical vocational education and training (TVET) centres be opened from 5.30pm to 11pm, so that employees who are working full-time can attend the training after office hours.

“So if every worker in the country is skilled, even the janitors, those who are working (as cleaners) in the toilets, if they are properly skilled, you can command a good income,” Kulasegaran told reporters after the National Labour Advisory Council meeting here. 

He cited Singapore as an example where he claimed that various personnel there have earned certifications and can be highly trained.

“If Singapore can do it, there’s no reason why we cannot do it,” the minister asserted.

When asked if Pakatan Harapan could achieve its 2018 election promise of raising the minimum wage to RM1,500 monthly within its first term of office, Kulasegaran simply restated the coalition’s manifesto pledge of doing so “within this period”.

He also indicated that with increased skills, an employee’s income can rise from the minimum wage of RM1,100, for instance, to a higher pay.

Kulasegaran said that he has presented these initiatives to the government.

TVET Malaysia was launched by former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in September 2017 after a rebranding process. It provides a variety of vocational courses.

Minimum wage based on sector for implementation in two years: Kula Segaran

IPOH: The implementation of the minimum wage according to sectors will only be implemented at the earliest, in two years, said Human Resources Minister M. Kula Segaran.

He said according to the National Wages Consultative Council Act (NWCC) 2011, a review of the minimum wage should be carried out every two years.

“Many people are unaware that that matters on wages are determined by a committee (National Wage Legislative Technical Committee), the minister has no power.

“Before the implementation of the minimum wage of RM1,100, discussions were held to cover all aspects, but according to the NWCC Act 2011, the matter will be reviewed and it is for later, not for now,“ he added.

He was speaking to reporters after the Meet & Greet Session at the Satria 4.0 & TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training) Seminar 2019 at the Ipoh Industrial Training Institute in Meru.

Last Monday, media reports had said that the government would review the minimum wage rates according to job sectors.

Meanwhile, in his speech at the event, Kula, who is MP for Ipoh Barat, told the trainees that those who possessed TVET qualifications had bright career prospects, including in the film industry.

BERJAYA TVET College inks MoA with DMC Training (Digital Marketing)

BERJAYA TVET College and DMC Training signed a memorandum of agreement recently on their strategic partnership to create additional Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programmes for students.

The programmes will be offered for BERJAYA TVET’s March 2019 intake.

The 12-month programme is BERJAYA TVET Colleges’ first official certified training programme in Digital Marketing. DMC Training will lead the coursework in Digital Marketing with the support of BERJAYA TVET College including the four months internship placement.

“Upon completion of this programme, students will receive dual certification from both organisations, enhancing job employability in the current digital era or become digital entrepreneurs,” said Kanendran T Arulrajah, president of BERJAYA TVET College.

“To be successful in digitizing businesses, we must have the right talent to execute digital business strategies. With the Digital Marketing certification, BERJAYA TVET College sees DMC Training as the right strategic partner to work together with in achieving our goals of growing more professional digital marketers,” said Mae Ho Seok Khen, chief executive officer of BERJAYA TVET College.

This initiative is aligned with the vision of the new Malaysian government in strengthening the nation’s digital infrastructure and helping young entrepreneurs and small businesses develop and grow.

“We are honoured to have been selected by BERJAYA TVET College for this partnership. Besides contributing our training experience in the Digital Marketing Certification programme, we will also be providing career placement for students graduating from this programme.

“This is part of DMC Training’s initiative in helping school leavers start off on the right career path in Digital Marketing,” said Charles Gregory, chief executive officer and founder of DMC Training.
